My name is Orpah Jemutai. I have a stepbrother, a stepsister, a mother and a stepfather. I had a very challenging childhood and was in and out of hospital since I was 4 years old. It was very expensive and put a lot of strain on the family. When I was 13 years old, I had to have an operation to fix the hole in my heart. The doctors were kind enough to perform the lifesaving surgery at a reduced cost. The operation was successful but unfortunately, I got diabetes as a result. My school life was difficult but I enjoyed being in class and learning. I was often at home because my mother could not afford my fees, which well-wishers mostly paid. I did my high school exams first in 2019 but resat the exams in 2020 and 2022 to get better grades. To me, it is a miracle to have been selected by New Routes. They have renewed a hope and light that I had almost lost. I am determined to become a teacher because of the kindness that I was shown by my teachers throughout my life. They went out of their way to help me. I would also like to educate, help, and encourage girls that they are valuable and precious.
